John Papin, Art & Design

          My current body of work focuses on research based in architecture, form, and function. It explores how these ideas can come together and influence each other. The results have accumulated using the diverse mediums of intaglio and thrown ceramics.

          With an invested interest in architecture, I gain inspiration from the meticulous thought processes that lead to detailed decisions that are often overlooked by a passerby. These structures designed for human use occupy a structural mass in space, which began as a simple concept. I consider how these buildings integrate function and form. I question how two buildings may serve the same function yet also appear drastically different both in style and construction.
          Combining my material interests of clay and traditional print, I am able to work directly with my hands, allocating as much time and detail into these formal explorations as necessary. This unusual mixture of materials and techniques has allowed for new and exciting opportunities to explore the relationship between architectural forms and function, on a scale that is purely domestic. When considering scale, a modest homage is made between the origin and purpose of ceramic vessels in the home, and the adaptability of works on paper for both decorative and practical purposes.
